  • Nationwide 70-80% of all animals entering animal shelters are killed.  In 2004, Austin killed 55% of the dogs and cats that came into the shelter.
  • Every year over 1,000,000 animals are killed in Texas animal shelters.
  • Euthanasia of unwanted animals costs Texas taxpayers an estimated cost of $20,000,000 per year.
  • 2 animals are killed every minute in animal shelters across Texas.

  • An unspayed dog is approximately 12 times more likely to develop mammary tumors than a dog spayed before her first year (by 6 -8 months of age).
  • One study finds that neutering decreases roaming tendencies in 90% of male dogs.  Preventing roaming can keep dogs safer by preventing them from being hit by a car, being harmed by act of cruelty, or wounded in a dog fight.
  • 25-30% of dogs entering animal shelters are purebreds.
  • Only 5% of cats entering US Animal shelters are reclaimed by their owners.  In 2004 Austin returned only 2.2% of the incoming cats to their owners.
